Long Weekend TGA

heather

This artricle was going to be the last long form post for me on cohost, but with the site closing today, and my lack effort in writing this post has meant that it is going to be a long form post here.

a new old laptop

On the 10 May 2024 I purchased a Lenovo ThinkPad X395, my second ThinkPad, after the X41.

The motivation was to replace my 12 year old Toshiba R830, with a more modern laptop, and with a new battery get a decent usage when using the laptop as a mobile device. Currently I cannot justify the £3000 price tag for an Apple M series arm laptop which would be a dream laptop, with the fact that it can run OpenBSD, have a long battery life and small form factor. The X395 meets the OpenBSD criteria, and although its reasonable size it's bigger than the X41 and similar to the R830.

The X395 turned up on the 14 May 24 and I set about installing OpenBSD after upgrading the bios in windows.

The X395 has an AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 3700U processor.

Costs

As I didn't know the condition of the battery I purchased a new battery from Lenovo, and also a 1TB NVME to ensure plenty of storage. I also purchased a sleeve to protect the laptop when it was in my RuckSack and the Lenovo RJ45 adapter for this laptop.

Costs of items to get the X395 set up
ItemCost (GBP)
Lenovo ThinkPad X395249.90
NVME 1TB69.99
Lenovo Battery68.40
Lenovo Cable RJ4531.06
Laptop Sleeve8.79
Total:397.08

So this laptop came in just shy of £400.

Pros

  • Works great with OpenBSD
  • RJ45 adapter

Cons

  • RAM cannot be upgraded
  • RJ45 adapter blocks the USB C port
