root partition full
I discovered that I have filled up my root partition - it was 103% full - a useful feature that allows the operating system to continue working, if you have PEBKAC, so I knew that I had been a muppet - but wasn't sure how discover my mistake…
du -xhs /
du to the rescue:
-x file system mount points not traversed
-h human readable output
-s display only grand total
And the answer was obvious the: a 936 Mb file in /dev that I had made by misusing dd.
